The halftime score was 7-5 to the Elande. The team played beyond themselves and were leading the game till the last minute. The Elande showed the same fighting spirit as their first six games of the season. Uj were pinned down on all play during the game. A last 10 second try by Uj clinched them the game. Final score 26-24 to Uj. A well deserved 2 bonus points for the Elande.

After trailing 22-10 at half time Alberton staged a comeback in the second half against a star studded Wits side. Enjoying most of the territory in the second half and a couple of mist try opportunities Alberton kept on the pressure and ended up with a final score of 34-17.

ONE OF THE MOST SPECULAR TRIES SCORED IN A ALBERTON JERSEY

On Saturday against Wits the second side winger Nsizwa Thorn Khumalo who played several games for the 1st side scored one of the most specular tries ever scored in a Alberton jersey. He received the ball inside his own 25 meters with about two opponents in front of him.

With a inside and outside swerve and plenty speed he outplayed the two opponents with another 3 opponents coming his way. A step to the inside he also beaten the opponents then the real speed came to the front. Thorn has plenty gas then he took the inside of the field and beaten another 3 players who saw his hills and scored under the po

ALBERTON TAKE ON LOG LEADERS PUKKE

The Eland 2nd team, A team that started the season with a flourish, winning the first 6 games of the year, finds themselves with their backs against the wall. Going in as underdogs against a well oiled Puk side, the coaches made minimal changes for this clash. Kyle Bima and Griek will anchor the scrums, with first team hooker Lesego Maelangwe coming down to bring some experience to the side. Former Raiders player, Kaya Twala packs down with the newly wed Stiaan Pelzer on lock. The loose trio will consist of Alex Venter, Duncan Slatter and captain Eugene Coetzee.

Backline coach Andre Marais, made minimal changes, with plenty of experience and talent that matches, much is expected of this backline. Former young gun at Wits, Enrico Els will take the reign at 9,joined by UJ’s 7’s specialist James Mofokeng on 10. SJ van Zyl returns to the side after his 1st team duties against UJ last weekend. Playing next to him at 13 is forrmer Griqua, Jakes Modise. On the wings we will have the Khumalo express, Thorn Khumalo and hard hitting Izzy Vula. Joined by the honey badger Mark Verwey at 15.

The bench brings some extra experience in the form of Vernon Lategan, and the return of Justin Liebenberg. Joined by Anton Kleynhans, Philangezwi Shabangu, Lohan Coetzee and Nico Krause.

SCORE NOT TRUE REFLECTION

Although the scoreboard showed 45-6 to Pukke Alberton put up a gutsy performance against the students. Four certain tries that did not go the way of Alberton due to over eagerness could of changed the outcome of the game.

MISTAKES IS COSTLY

Momentum in the first couple of games this year saw Alberton building into a power unit. The last 2 games some players moved up to the 1st side. Still a prominent unit but on yesterdays game mistakes crept in and against Uj any team can not afford to make basic mistakes and they took advantage of Alberton’s mistakes. Full time score 48-5 to Uj.

After a slow start and leading the game at 12-0 at half time saw them coming back at full pace in the second half. One player that is standing out game by game is JJ Kruger supported by Jiovanni Botha with 2 ‘Frik du Preez tries ” of late an effort of note. A good team effort by the squad taking the win 50-7.
