The annual awards ceremony for the 2023 season was held at the club to recognize the clubs outstanding accomplishments.
LIONS PRIZE GIVING AT ELLISPARK
The Lions yearly prize giving were held at Ellispark. An open event which was well organized and enjoyed by all participants and spectators. Our 3 rd side received the trophy for the winners of the league for the 3rd sides in the Castle Lager Pirates Grand Challenge competition.

FIDELITY ADT ELANDE ON TOP BY TAKING THE CASTLE LAGER PIRATES GRAND CHALLENGE CUP
The Elande 3rd side became the 2023 champions in a hard fought match played at Alberton Rugby Club by beating Pirates Rugby Club 17-15. After beating Pukke the previous week the Elande kept to the basics and coaches orders and took all their chances with a splendid performance on the day.

The Elande will take on Pirates this Saturday at 13h00 to see who is the 2023 Castle Lager Pirates Grand Challenge champion.
DREAM TEAM THROUGH TO FINALS.
The Fidelity Adt Elande 3rd side made history yesterday to proceed to the final of the Castle Lager Pirates Grand Challenge. They have beaten the log leaders Pukke 23-17 in a very entertaining match at Alberton Rugby Club. They went into the game well prepared with one thing in mind and that is a win specially against the log leaders. During the week an extra training session were introduced with a special session called by the coaches. They made the club very proud. Next Saturday they will be playing the Pirates Rugby Club in the final at Alberton Rugby Club.
A historical win for the Elande against Pukke. No Player could be singled out as the player of the match. In this game the whole squad walked of the field as heroes. To beat Pukke 23-17 in a very close match it took determination and guts to hold on to this win till the end.
DREAM BECOMING A REALITY FOR THE FIDELITY ADT ELANDE THIRD SIDE
After a difficult start to the season a dream became a reality. From the start of the season, all their friendlies were cancelled due to other clubs not having a 3rd side. Then the league started two game were cancelled. Game time were lacking when they actually got going. A new team was build which made it more difficult for the coaches. They kept there passion going for the game of rugby. The team got better and better they gained some more players. They got better and played for each other. Then they became friends then a family then they turned into a winning unit. They took the field yesterday with determination and one thing in mind that is a win. The coaches and management turned their change room into a fable that will never be forgotten. Well done to all players, coaches Tiny, Juan and Clinton together with managers Florrie and Michaela, you made the club proud.
FIDELITY ADT ELANDE THIRD SIDE PREPARRING FOR SEMI FINALS
Preparations are going well for our 3rd side this week. A serious approach by the coaches they added an additional training session this week. All players are injuries free and looking in good shape for the semi final. A game not to be missed. Let us get behind our team and support them till the final whistle blows.

The Mastercard Golden Lions wrap up the group stages of the Women’s Premier Division against the Blue Bulls Daisies at Alberton this coming Saturday. The game will kick of at 13h00. Calling all supporters to come down and support the Lions in their round 12 match of the Premier competition.

The Alberton Madalas formed a Ladies team with the name Alberton Madeliefies. The Alberton Madaliefies started training a couple of weeks ago and played their first match yesterday. We just want to wish them all the best with their new adventure.

Its official. the Alberton Rugby Club boardroom formerly known as the Eland Room has been named after the Alberton Rugby Club President Mr Manie Reyneke. Well deserved honor after 44 years with the club. After a big game fought by the Eland XV vs Uj the management of both clubs gathered in the Eland Room to hear a heartfelt speech by the Club Manager Rory Lategan, a speech of note that hit home to a man of note who have walked miles and stepped big steps in the sport world.

A reunion will take place this coming Saturday when close to 200 ex rugby players will take part in a first ever event arranged by the club. This will go down in the record books and in the future regular reunions will be arranged for these players. After the function a parade will take place on the field introducing and welcoming these ex players. This will be an event not to be missed. Anton Vlok ex player and ex 1st side coach at Fidelity ADT Elande is taking refereeing by storm. He is on the Golden Lions Referee panel to referee games in the Castle Lager Pirates Grand Challenge Competition. We just want to wish him all the best in his new venture and we believe with his dedication Vlokkie will make quick progress to higher levels.

Juan Swart who is currently the annalist and skills coach at the club was appointed as the new Director of Rugby at the Fidelity ADT Elande. We wish him all the best and we know he will be a huge asset to the club going forward.

In the after match function in our famous Eland Room we were privedledge to have special guests attending our after match functions. At the Wanderers game Cheese van Tonder paid us a visit. Cheese played for the Lions and the Freestate. At the Roodepoort game Willem Stolzs who played for the Lions, Willie Wepener who played for the Lions and currently coaching Roodepoort, Springbok Lawrence Sepakha who played for the Lions and Lions exco member Manie Reyneke.
FIDELITY ADT ELAND PLAYERS IN THE RUNNING FOR TOP POINT SCORERS
Our second side players Thorn Khumalo and SJ van Zyl are in contention in the Castle Lager Pirates Grand Challenge for the most point scorers for the 2023 season. Thorn scored 5 tries before the Roodepoort game and is currently the second highest try scorer and SJ is currently in the number 2 spot with 41 points before the Roodepoort game.
TITOS MONDLANE HUNGRY FOR TRIES
The fullback from the 3rd side Titos Mondlane set up a new record for the Elande by scoring 5 tries in one match against Roodepoort on Saturday. A promising player with endless talent and skill is a player to be watched for the future.
MASTERCARD GOLDEN LIONS WOMEN TAKES THE HONOR AGAINT THE SHARKS
Both sides treated the huge crowd to champagne rugby. Skill and talent from both sides were displayed in this historical match. On the days play not a single player can be singled out for the woman of the match award the aculeate must go to both squads. The Lions defense was great at he end from keeping the Sharks going over the white line. A plus must go out the referee who handled this match in a very professional manner. The Lions took the honor by beating the Sharks 17-10.

FIRST GAME IN TOUCH RUGBY LEAGUE AT JEPPE QUANDOM
Managed by Tamzin Valentine on their first game this year coach Jancke Van Tonder took her troops to Jeppe Quandom and entered a touch rugby league competition. This will be played every Wednesday evening at Jeppe. Jancke managed to get a side together of six and played their first game against a provincial outfit who played with rolling subs. The ladies played the full game with six players. Although they went down 10-0 to their opponents they used this match as a learning curve for the next games to come.
Calling all ladies who is interested to play to come down on a Tuesday and Thursday night at 18h30 to 20h00.
ONE OF THE MOST SPECULAR TRIES SCORED IN A ALBERTON JERSEY
On Saturday against Wits the second side winger Nsizwa Thorn Khumalo who played several games for the 1st side scored one of the most specular tries ever scored in a Alberton jersey. He received the ball inside his own 25 meters with about two opponents in front of him.
With a inside and outside swerve and plenty speed he outplayed the two opponents with another 3 opponents coming his way. A step to the inside he also beaten the opponents then the real speed came to the front. Thorn has plenty gas then he took the inside of the field and beaten another 3 players who saw his hills and scored under the posts.

MOTIVATION FROM LEGENDS AND EX ALBERTON PLAYERS
Motivation speeches were sent to Alberton rugby Club before the Pirates encounter. Ruan Nel is currently playing for the Stormers and was a legend in the Blitzsboks team who gave loads of entertainment to South Africans and world spectators. Well done on the win against Connacht. Ruan played a huge roll in the excellent win. All the best to the Stormers in the final against Munster on Saturday.
Shane Kirkwood is currently the captain of the Pumas who is the current holders of the Currie Cup. We just want to wish Shane and his team the best for the games ahead in the Currie Cup competition.
ELANDE VS PIRATES AT GREENSIDE
The Elande will travel to Greenside on Saturday for their encounter against Pirates. This will be the Eland”s fourth Castle Lager Pirates Grand Challenge game for the season. All games will be played earlier due to load sharing.
After a difficult game against Roodepoort, the Elande made a couple of changes for the clash against Pirates this coming weekend.
Well deserved starts and positional changes are part of the plan for the Elande too bounce back.
Brandon Shoultz gets a start at hooker, joined by the big Lindo Dladla and Brendon Schäfer. JJ Kruger gets his first start of the season after putting in the work at 2nd team level, Shaun Botha will be his lock partner. Jared Steyn, another new start who’s getting better game after game joins Roberto Torres and line out genius Shaun Potgieter finishing up the pack that needs to take the game up.
Thylor Paulsen will partner with captain, Bennie “warthog” Botha as the halfbacks for the game. A positional shift for the returning Jason Botha sees him in the midfield with Danny Westenberg. The flyers will be made up of Byron van Onselen, Juan Westenberg and for the second time, Mark “honeybadger” Verwey.
Jean Combrink, Lesego Maelangwe, the Soul of the Elande, Solomzi Nhlabathi, Alex Venter and Jiovani Botha will put in the work from the bench. Tot point scorer of the club, SJ van Zyl gets his opportunity from the bench, joined by Keagan van Schalkwyk and Nkosinathi Ncube.

The Elande will travel to High School Bastion on Saturday in Roodepoort for their encounter against Roodepoort. This will be their 3rd game in the Castle Lager Pirates Grand Challenge competition for the season. Both clubs are evenly match and we hoping for a good game of rugby.

ALBERTON UPDATED THE HISTORY WITH A NEW RECORD
Alberton played Wanderers Rugby Club at home yesterday. The two clubs were evenly balanced. The record was set by the Elande yesterday by winning all 5 games in the Castle Lager Pirates Grand Challenge Competition. It was recorded that in the past ten years of the competition the Elande could not achieved these wins on one day. Well done to the Elande you guys made us proud.
THE END FOR A GREAT STALWARD IN LIONS RUGBY
The end of a great rugby career came to the end for Jaco Kriel yesterday playing his last game at Loftus against Zebre. Again he delivered a never ending performance when the Lions were the victor’s 50 -35. We salute you Jaco you were a great servant of the game. All the best with your new venture.

The club kicked off the 2023 season with an amazing start last night. The new additions and returning players all looking very motivated for the challenge. Ladies and gentlemen lets get down and get the work in. The atmosphere is great and club ruby is ALIVE!

ALBERTON CLUB HOSTED LIONS GAMES
The club also hosted a couple of Lions games the past years. it was a huge success. At the games we had between 3000 to 4000 people on the pavilion.
RUGBY TRIALS A HUGE SUCCESS
The trials was a huge success. Well organized by the coaches and managers a big thank you are going out to them. Our field was looking like a carpet well done to Stefan and Martin. Thank you for the medics and the Golden Lions referees on the day. The coaches can be proud on the performances at the trials. Loads of talent came to the front. The juniors looked good with some talent for the years to come. Alberton is in for a very good season for 2023.
KEVIN DE KLERK DERBY TROPHY
The Kevin de Klerk trophy were introduced in 2015 by the Union Rugby Club. The reason being that Kevin De Klerk started his club rugby at Union as a under twenty player. He also ended his rugby career at Alberton Rugby Club. The first Derby was held at Union Rugby Club on their Midas rugby day. Alberton won the first Derby. The Cup changed hands between the two clubs and Alberton is the current holder of the cup. Due to a busy schedule in our league no date can be set aside to continue with the Derby for 2023. This was a good gesture from both clubs to initiate this Derby. On this Derby day you draw between 3000 to 5000 spectators. On the day of play it is always a very close competition between the two clubs which always ends up that the winner between the first sides will become the winner of the trophy.
LOUIS ODENDAAL DIGGERS DERBY TROPHY
The Louis Odendaal Derby Trophy between Alberton Rugby Club and Diggers Rugby Club was initiated in 2023. He is currently the Chairman of the club and been on the committee for the past 4 years. He wore the Diggers 1st side jersey at number 10 for 13 years. In this time period he played between 200 to 250 games for the 1 st side. He was the top point scorer in the Trek League which became the Pirates Grand Challenge for years. He became a handful of players up to 1985 who represented Transvaal at Craven Week, u 20, Transvaal B Side, Rooibokke and Senior Side. He played several games for the Kwagga Barbarians and also played for Eastern Transvaal. As a youngster he represented Southern Transvaal in Soccer and were offered a scholarship in England by Roy Bailey to play soccer. Due to circumstances he could not take up the offer. In 1976 when the All Blacks toured South Africa his principal at Fakkel High School Mr Wouter du Toit arranged who was the manager for the Springbok Team that he had to assist Syd Going and Kit Fawcett with the run around kicking style. For him it was a huge honour.
DERBY DAY THIS COMING SATURDAY
The Elande will be taking on Diggers rugby club Saturday 25 March at home for the inaugural Louis Odendaal trophy. Louis Odendaal, current Chairman of the Alberton outfit and Diggers old boy and legend.
A strong derby formed between these two centurions, going all the way back to the sixties, when the team of Dean Dippenaar lost 5 – 11 against Diggers rugby club, the only game the Alberton boys lost that year. This was in a Diggers golden era; they dominated the Transvaal club league between 1949 – 1978. Alberton did however come back, beating the Diggers outfit with a massive score of 21 – 3. Most recently a strong 2nd team outfit from Diggers came to upset the 2nd team from Alberton in the 2018 Bailey cup final. Alberton walked out victorious lifting the cup. The year 2022 saw Alberton and Diggers squaring of twice, the first encounter was a pre-season friendly that saw Diggers walking away with the spoils. The next game would be in the Memorial cup, Alberton would play some of the best rugby of the year, putting up a 50 and beating Diggers 58 – 8.
The day will be a festival of rugby, starting at 12:30 with the Madalas playing. After the Madalas there will be a boat race, followed by the young guns at 13:45. The 2nd team will play at 14:55 on the A field, while the u19’s occupies the B-field, followed by the main event at 17:00.

Chris Ferguson is a 34 year old biokineticist that has been practicing in private practice for over 10 years at Milpark Hospital (cardiac), Old Eds Virgin Active , Lusito Land school for special needs and now at Alberton Rugby Club. He is a enthusiastic ultra marathon distance athlete having completed multiple Comrades Marathons, Midmar Miles, 947s, Fish Canoe marathons and Triathlons. He specializes in Neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and also enjoys working with athletes and the elderly . He has a Bcom Sports Management UJ BA Biokinetics.
WE WELCOME JUAN SWART A SPECIALIST IN SKILLS AND CONDITIONING COACHING
Juan obtained his HDE from the North West University. He has a level 2 coaching in world rugby. He also concentrate is the 7s game. The premier division is his highest in skill conditioning. At Olympic level he assisted in mountain biking, semi pro soccer and sa referee panel. Numerous schools made use of Juan’s skills and conditioning. In 2008 he did the tactical analyzing for the Lions Currie Cup side. He hails from Kwa Zulu Natal and is currently in Johannesburg.
DERBY DAY A HUGE SUCCESS
The Derby was a huge success. Hopefully this Derby can continue for the next 30 years. The once mighty side from Springfield who was the best club side in the world had 7 Springbok players in their club side and 14 Transvaal players from the side in the 1970s. They moved to Randburg in the early nineties. On Saturday our 1st and 2nd sides were victorious. Our Chairman handed his memorabilia to the Diggers club who played for Diggers for 13 years in nearly 300 matches and scoring over 3000 points.
CHANGEROOMS UPGRADED TO PROFESSIONAL STATUS
Our 1st side changeroom was upgraded to professional status. This must be comparable to any University facilities in South Africa. The opponents changerooms will also be upgraded by next week.

OPENING OF NEWLY RENOVATED CHANGEROOMS
The newly renovated change rooms were opened on the Diggers Derby day before the game by our President Manie Reyneke and Chairman Louis Odendaal. Our 2 overseas local players from Acklam Rugby Club Thylor Paulsen and Shaun Potgieter handed over a rugby jersey and plaque from Acklam Rugby Club.

What a day for the Pirates Grand Challenge League with the announcement of Castle Lager SA coming on board as the title sponsor of one of the oldest leagues in the country. Thanks Castle Lager and welcome to the family. The 3 members who represented the club was Chairman Louis Odendaal, 1st side Captain Bennie Botes and 1st side Team Manager Tamsyn Valentine.
DAMIAN MAKING HUGE PROGRESS AT CLUB TATRA
A transfer bomb on the Tatra, the club’s sports director Filip Vacek introduced new reinforcements to our club yesterday. After a lot of effort, an amazing thing happened, when two South African players Damian Glaus (1st grade) and the world-class star and long-time representative of South Africa in 7s rugby Branco Du Preez will strengthen our team for the spring part of the season. Both are already preparing for the 1st round of Extraliga this Saturday at Markéta. The Extraliga will be specific this year in that it will be narrowed down to 6 teams for next year, resulting in a higher level of matches and at the same time putting pressure on clubs for fear of relegation. Like other teams, we have decided to strengthen our senior selection and we hope that our ambitions will be reflected in the results on the pitch. We are keeping our fingers crossed for the whole team to torment the competition’s biggest favorite, Říčany, and we hope that it will help the whole club.
Satisfaction also reigned in the implementation team, where Tatra’s head coach Jan Oswald has the opportunity to use Damian’s physical abilities and Branca’s vast experience and insight into the game. Yesterday’s official introduction of the players took place in a relaxed spirit, with appreciative applause from the full clubhouse, which appreciated the answers to questions and the chance to see them on the field in the spring season games.
Thanks to the many people who participated in the transfer and helped us to see it through to a successful conclusion, as well as to the sponsors who will help cover the costs incurred.
We hope that it will be possible to agree on a closer cooperation with the ČSRU and to use Branca in the preparation of our representative 7s rugby selections.

Alberton Rugby Club and Wits University will be the first two clubs meeting each other in the first game on the field in the Castle Lager Pirates Grand Challenge Competition. The opening of the sponsorship took place at Ellispark last week Wednesday.We want to thank Castle Lager who is part of such a prestige’s Competition. The Pirates Grand Challenge started a hundred and thirty five years ago.
BIG SUCCESS ON HISTORICAL DAY
This Historical day was the opening of the new Castle Lager Pirates Grand Challenge competition. Alberton played Wits and Uj played Pirates. This will go down in history that these 4 clubs opened the competition. Our systems were ready to go. The parking, our Ticketpro ticket system was in order, food was great and the music show was a success. The facilities was in a excellent condition which includes our carpet rugby pitch. All 3 matches was a treat to the spectators. A legend of Alberton Rugby Club Oom Hammer Engelbreght who played over 300 games for Alberton from the 1970″s to 1980″ did the handover of the new 1st side jersey to the players.
