The Alberton Madalas Golden Oldies Rugby Club is a Veteran Rugby Club for players to re-live their youth from an age of 35 years and older. We play the game we so dearly love with
Fun, Friendship & fraternity. We are passionate men who come together as brothers, and proud to say that we are also Family orientated. Our roots stretch as far back as 1985, re-established in 2011. Since then, we have won the Award for the Best Rugby Team three times at the South African National Golden Oldies Annual Nationals Tournament.
GOLDEN OLDIES RUGBY ETHOS AND RULES
The Golden Oldies experience begins when you accept that you’re at far greater risk from what you may do to yourself and have done to you socially, than anything which may happen to you on the field. Golden Oldies Rugby Festivals are primarily the means of bringing together rugby enthusiasts, 35 years of age and over to share their common interest in rugby and have a great time, whilst doing it!
There are 3 main principles on which every Golden Oldies Rugby Festival is built on:
- To provide players from any Country an environment in which sportsmanship and camaraderie thrive. The festivals are founded on FUN, FRIENDSHIP & FRATERNITY for those who have retired from serious competitive play, but wish to continue participating in their favourite sport for sheer enjoyment.
- To provide an environment for participants to play against others who still prefer to play games more competitively, the opportunity to do so against like-minded teams, but still remaining dedicated to playing in the spirit of goodwill.
- To provide opportunities to highlight and promote rugby throughout the world, and to create positive reasons for enthusiasts to retain an active interest in rugby. VSL works with and is sanctioned by the governing bodies of each country, where a World Festival is held, whilst ensuring strong involvement with Clubs, i.e. development and charities in the host area.
AWARD WINNING RUGBY TEAM
The Alberton Madalas were awarded the Team of the Year in 2013, 2014 and 2016. The Golden Lions Golden Oldies Ruby Association (GLGORA) Team of the Year is based on team spirit and positive participation in Golden Oldies Festivals and Events. The winner is elected in the GLGORA AGM at the end of every year by the other Oldies Teams.
NATIONALS
The South African Golden Oldies Rugby Association (SANGORA) will appoint a Golden Oldies Club annually to host the South African Golden Oldies Nations Rugby Festival. The Festival is attended by Golden Oldies Clubs from all over South Africa and the Alberton Madalas ‘boys’ are no stranger to these events.

NOTABLE PERSONALITIES
- Winter of 2011, Danie Putter with the help of Peet Bekker, re-established the Alberton Madalas. Whilst there were huge interest, it was still necessary for Danie and Peet to do the rounds at the Club House, in order to recruit members for the team.
- When Peet moved on to work in Fochville, he assisted the Losberg Golden Oldies with their efforts in 2016, and Danie continued with the Madalas to eventually represent the Golden Oldies as the President of the Golden Lions Golden Oldies and later as the Chairman of Alberton Rugby Club. Today Danie is still an avid player and one of the fastest men over 50 to grace the Alberton fields.
- Jack Wagner aka Dozi, served right from the start as Treasurer for the Madalas. Whilst Dozi still serves on the Management Team of the Madalas, he also serves as Treasurer for GLGORA and the Alberton Rugby Club. True servant of the game. Whilst doing all this, Dozi also played for the 3rd team – which he Captained – and was voted most valued forward player in the 2016 Season.
- The Madalas are proud of their strong player heritage. Personalities like Joe Steyn and Anton Vlok are but a few to mention, but the real mention must go to the countless players that will, in their free time, be available to Coach Alberton Juniors for the future and give their time to the administration of the Game. These are our true heroes!
